Mental Illness – Spotting Suicidal Behavior

Depressions - Warning SignsSpotting Suicidal Behavior

Guest Post by Adrienne Erin

Globally, over one million people commit suicide every year, resulting in an average of one suicide every 40 seconds. Women make suicide attempts three times more than men, but male suicide attempts are four times more likely to prove fatal.

Learning to recognize early signs of suicidal behavior can prevent tragedy. While none of the following signs guarantee a person is suicidal, they suggest the need for concern and need to be taken seriously.

Mental Illness and Substance Abuse

Mental health plays a large role in most suicides. Clinical depression and other mental disorders are factors in over 90 percent of suicides. The risk increases even more when substance abuse occurs in combination with a mental disorder.

Untreated depression is the number one cause of suicide. A person experiencing depression may exhibit signs of deep sadness, despair or hopelessness. He or she may lose interest in activities usually found enjoyable and withdraw from social contact. Disruptions to sleeping and eating habits are common, and the person may have difficulty thinking or concentrating.

Personal History and Suicide

A family history of suicide or mental disorders increases a person’s risk of suicidal behavior. Family violence, sexual and physical abuse, chronic pain and illness may also trigger suicide.

Knowing someone who committed suicide also increases the risk, as it makes the possibility of killing yourself seem more attainable.

Highly publicized suicides of famous figures can cause what doctors refer to as “suicide contagion,” a rash of suicides in the aftermath of the famous person’s death. One of the most famous occurrences of this was after the death of Marilyn Monroe; in the month after her death there were 200 more suicides than average.

The most important risk factor, however, is a previous suicide attempt. Between 20 to 50 percent of people who commit suicide made an earlier attempt.

Personal Warning Signs

People thinking about or planning suicide may exhibit any of the following behaviors:

•    Constantly talking or thinking about death or suicide
•    Saying they feel useless, helpless or worthless
•    Taking dangerous, unnecessary risks
•    Tying up loose ends, updating wills and generally “putting affairs in order”
•    Visiting or calling people to say goodbye.

In addition, a sudden emotional shift from despair and sadness to calmness or apparent happiness may indicate an individual has made the mental commitment to suicide.

Access to Deadly Items

Easy access to pills, rope, knives, or firearms increases suicide risk. People exhibiting suicidal behavior should be isolated from any means of ending their own life. Doing so can be tricky. While concerned people might lock up knives, prescription meds and firearms, they may neglect garden sheds, where a suicidal person has access to sharp tools, fertilizers and other materials. Even common household cleaners and yard products can also be used as poison. Because a person determined to end their own life can be desperate and creative, it is best to stay with the person at all times and encourage them to get help.

Taking Steps to Prevent Suicide

If you suspect someone is suicidal, take the situation seriously. If possible, talk with the individual, and be sure to listen attentively. Don’t be judgmental or try to talk them out of suicide. Instead let them know you care and want to help them through this bad time. Avoid trite statements like “it’s not that bad” or “you’ve got a lot to live for.” As far as the suicidal person is concerned, these statements simply are not true. Instead, focus on specific problems and solutions.

Encourage the individual to seek medical attention or to call a suicide hotline. If, you think the person is in imminent danger of suicide, keep him or her under observation, remove any dangerous items or drugs from the vicinity, and call for emergency medical assistance.

Aromatherapy and Your Immune System

Health TipsAromatherapy and Your Immune System
Guest Post by Neil Maycock

Boosting your immune system is the best way to keep your body healthy. The immune system is the machine inside the human body that is responsible for making sure that any foreign pathogen that enters is quickly eliminated. The key elements that fight off foreign pathogens in the body are called white blood cells. There are many types of white blood cells and they move around through the entire body system swimming in a fluid called the lymph. To boost your immune system you need to increase the production of white blood cells in your body and their sensitivity to foreign pathogen.

This is where essential oils can play a significant role. Right from the time of ancient Egypt people knew that plants and their essential oils could be used to improve the functioning of the immune system. That knowledge has been passed on from generation to generation and is today practiced in an alternative form of medicine that is referred to as aromatherapy. Oils are extracted from plants which are then used and applied on the body to enhance and improve the health of the person.
What happens inside the body?

When a pathogen enters the body it is identified by the immune system as a foreign particle. This is followed by the production of more white blood cells which will then attack the pathogen and eliminate it. Sometimes the immune system fails to produce the level of white blood cells needed for the work required. The fact is, the human body is constantly invaded with all kinds of foreign particles that pass through our skin or our nose to enter the body. The more white blood cells we can produce, the better.

Essential oils are made of certain molecules that can boost the immune system as a whole. Compared to over the counter medication which are produced with the sole purpose of targeting one specific disease causing agent, essential oils come with different qualities all at the same time. They are made of molecules that kill bacteria, fungi, viruses and at the same time boost the production of blood cells.

Relying on essential oils helps prevent the disease causing agents from finding their way inside.

There are different types of oils that can be used to get the desired immune boosting effect, rosemary, bergamot and grapefruit being among the most popular ones. Here are some others:

Lemon oil
Oils extracted from citrus plants have been used for years in treating people with immunity problems. The oil invigorates your whole body and the result is an improved immune system. Your body should be able to better fight diseases once the immune system has regained its strength. Lemon oil also has antiseptic properties so it can be used on wounds and cuts to keel germs before they even get inside.

Cinnamon oil
The oil from Cinnamon is used to treat infections whether it is from bacteria or fungi. You can boost your immune system by diluting the oil and putting it on your skin, or taking it internally through inhalation. Its antimicrobial power is strong enough to reduce the number pathogens inside you.

Oregano Oil
This is oil is known to be one of the most effective when it comes to boosting the immune system. Some experts believe it is even more powerful than antibiotics. One advantage of essential oils is that they are natural so they don’t come with side effects like chemically engineered drugs do. The vapor of this oil can be used to fight bronchial problems by inhaling it.

Eucalyptus oil
This is yet another oil that is effective in treating immunity problems. You can rely on the oil to deal with problems related to the respiratory tract. You can also use it in therapeutic baths and as an inhaler.

Different essential oils can be used together in a recipe to further improve the overall effect. Using them for massage is also advised and it improves the circulation of the lymph, the fluid on which the white blood cells swim.
Remember it is equally important to keep healthy habits like eating well and exercising often. Essential oils alone are not guaranteed to work if you don’t take proper care of yourself first.

The Benefits of Traditional Chinese Medicine For Children

Traditiona Chinese Medicine is a healthy alternative medicine optionThe Benefits of Traditional Chinese Medicine For Children

Guest post by Maya Johnson

Traditional Chinese medicine is perhaps one of the oldest professional medicines that are practiced constantly in the world today. The concept of these traditional medicine used in China is to identify different imbalances within your body and correct them. This system of medicine which basically uses massage, herbal treatments and acupuncture at their primary method of treatment proves to be a completely safe and effective treatment for both children and adults.

How does Traditional Chinese Medicine help in Treating Children?

The theory of traditional Chinese medicine is essentially based on the theory of creating harmony and balance between the yin and the yang (magnetic and dynamic, positive and negative) polarities. Thus, in order to understand, cure and prevent disease or illness, this theory tries to look for different signs and symptoms that may cause disharmony in the internal and external environment of a child.

Treating your child using traditional Chinese medicine not only aids in treating the symptoms but also helps cure the root of the problem in an effective manner.

Benefits of Traditional Chinese Medicine for Children

Effective: Traditional medicines in China prove to be a highly effective treatment for children because these herbal remedies are not only prescribed individually, but also custom written according to the specific needs and requirements of each child.

Versatile: Chinese herbal remedies are known to treat various types of diseases and illness in an effective and successful manner. These herbal formulas not only aid in treating ear infection in infants in a quick and effective way, but also help cure cold, allergies or skin problems in children in an efficient way. Moreover, since Chinese herbal medicines are available in the form of pills or oral liquid, making it convenient for parents to administer these herbal medicines to their children. This proves to be highly beneficial for all those children experiencing chronic illness or problems related to physical development.

Safe: One of the greatest benefits of traditional Chinese medicine is the fact that it is made of all natural ingredients and does not contain any kind of chemicals. This proves to be highly beneficial in not only preventing damage to the child’s physical and neurological development, but also treats the child without any side effects or adverse reactions.

Uses simple technique – Tui Na Massage: This type of soothing massage used in the traditional Chinese medicine offers psychological as well as physical benefits, thereby speeding up the ability a child’s body to heal itself. Parents are often taught the simple techniques of this massage to help treat their child at home in-between professional sessions. Tui Na massage which is a gentle alternative to acupuncture proves to be highly effective for children who are less the 10 years of age.

Advocates Simple Diet Changes: The fact that simple diet changes can prove to be highly beneficial in preventing illness in children, traditional Chinese medicine advocates certain diet changes for children to treat them successfully. While the diet of a breast feeding mother is examined to treat an infant, children are often recommended to avoid dairy products, greasy or sugary foods to help them stay healthy and fit.

Traditional Chinese medicine thus proves to be a perfect solution to help promote healthy lifestyle, prevent illness and cure common ailments in children in simple, safe and effective manner.

Hurricane Sandy – Health and Disaster

I apologize for the lapse in posts on this site. I was affected by Hurricane Sandy. Living in the southern part of NYC, we were hit hard – everyone was flooded, some were injured, and there were those who lost their lives.

In my particular area, the south part of Queens, we had sewer backup and Jamaica Bay come into our homes. We were without electricity for 11 days and without heat for a little over two weeks. The gas shortage at the time, due to electric outage and short gasoline supplies, made matters much worse. And, all the local stores, including drug stores and a couple of hospitals, were closed due to the damage from Sandy. It was a frightening experience.

There are some areas, such as Staten Island and Breezy Point, that are still in severe devastation and without power.

Having Multiple Sclerosis, I thank God I was able to get through the hurricane and work to clean out our basement. I had the strength and stamina to endure what was and is needed, even though I haven’t seen my acupuncturist in a month. Now, we’re trying to rebuild.

What did become problematic is my chemical sensitivity and allergies. After we had the water pumped out of the basement, there was major clean up involved. First everything had to be removed, including sheet rock, insulation, and any wood beams. Then the entire basement had to be disinfected. The Clorox and other chemicals used played havoc on my chemical sensitivities.

In addition to this, my daughter lost her home, so she and her dog are living with me. I’m allergic to dogs.

Between the chemicals and the dog, I’ve been to the doctor twice for an asthma cough.

There’s actually been a number of people with coughs from the flood and its clean up.

There’s still more to come also. The walls in the basement need to be painted with a paint that helps prevent moisture getting through, then after the basement is rebuilt with walls, they need to be painted.

So, all in all, the chemical sensitivity has caused more problems thus far than the MS.

Unfortunately, there’s still much to do and I’m still dealing with FEMA and my insurance company. I’ll try to get back to regular informative postings here this week or next week. And, I’ll talk more about the Sandy experience.

My prayers go out to all those effected by Hurricane Sandy. And, a huge thank you to all the volunteers who took and are taking time out of their own lives to help those in need.

Your Health and Diet – What Do You Have Control Over?

Health Tips For some reason, when I try to exercise I get sick. Whether it’s from the multiple sclerosis or the chronic fatigue syndrome, if I exercise for more than five or so minutes the glands in my neck, below my jaw will swell a bit, I might get pins and needles, and just feel overall miserable.

The symptoms don’t come on immediately, but by the end of the day or the next day, I’ll feel awful. And, I’ll feel worse for days or weeks.

We all know that exercise is a key factor in staying healthy, in fact, when asked what the number one thing a person can do to ‘be a healthier you,’ neurologist and MS specialist Dr. Brian Apatoff, said, “exercise.”

I asked Dr. Apatoff this question and he didn’t hesitate for a moment. He explained that exercise has been found to help in every aspect of a person’s wellbeing. And, its benefits go beyond one’s physical health; a person’s mental and emotional state also benefit from exercise.

While exercise is extremely important, and most people do have control over whether or not they do excise, for some people a sufficient amount of exercise isn’t really possible.

So, what do you have control over in regard to your health?

I’ve thought about this, and it seems the only thing you have control over is eating. You decide what to eat and when. It’s up to you what you put in your body.

With this being the case, wouldn’t you think that everyone would be focused on eating healthy, especially if an unhealthy diet can play havoc with your health? Toxins and processed foods weaken the immune system and with chronic illnesses the immune system is already compromised.

Unfortunately, a number of people just can’t get control of their eating.

My question then is this: Why do some of us eat unhealthy when we know it’s bad for our health? Why do some of us eat unhealthy when it actually makes us worse? Eating an unhealthy diet effects multiple sclerosis, leaky gut syndrome, allergies, and just about everything pertaining to our health.

I know there has to be an emotional component to the reason. But, why don’t we simply have the control or the will power to just say NO to unhealthy foods?

I also know that with some chronic illnesses, such as chronic fatigue and MS, lack of energy is a factor to cooking healthy, but why can some manage to navigate the obstacles to eating smart?

This is something I’ve been puzzled with for quite a while. I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Acupuncture and Children with Henry Zhon-Hong Lee

TCM and AcupunctureAs a grandparent, I think about children and their health. As a health writer, I research and ask questions on topics I’m concerned about and questions I think my readers will be interested in also. Acupuncture and children is one of those topics.

Dr. Henry Zhon-Hong Lee is the President of the American Acupuncturist Association. He is also an NCCA DPL. Herbalist. Along with these accomplishments, he has degrees in Eastern medicine from Traditional Chinese Medical College, and in Western medicine from the Beijing Medical College. While practicing Western medicine in China Dr. Lee specialized in neurology and psychiatry. He is also a member of the World Acupuncture Organization. Dr. Lee has had many years of training; this along with an exceptional ability to tailor treatments to each individual patient has made him a sought after expert in his field.

I’ve known Dr. Lee for a number of years and I am in a very fortunate position to ask this acupuncturist extraordinaire questions about children’s health. His success rate with numerous disorders and diseases is quite impressive and he has graciously allowed my questions on children’s health.

Question 1: What is the most important thing parents can do for their children?

According to Dr. Lee parents need to make sure their children eat healthy. This means eating natural foods and avoiding processed foods. The American diet is full of processed foods. He also recommends that children be given as little sugar as possible, preferably, none. Processed foods and sugar weaken the immune system.

Question 2: What are the most common illnesses or disorders that you treat in children?

Dr. Lee was quick to respond with digestive problems, poor eating habits and lack of appetite, along with stomach pain. These are the three most common problems. Next, would be asthma, chronic bronchitis, a weak immune system, Autism, and Tourette Syndrome.

Question 3: Do you treat babies?

Dr. Lee does treat babies, but he does not use needles on children under 3-years-old. He uses a machine similar to a TENS machine. This is a machine with wires; at the end of the wires are pads. He attaches the pads to various spots on the baby or toddler’s body. The machine then sends very slow doses of electrical impulses to the pads.

I’ll be asking Dr. Lee other health related questions regarding children’s health and that of adults. So, stay tuned.

Depression Disorder – One Acupuncturist’s View

Balance and Health Depression is a crippling disorder and a frightening one for the individual and his/her family. I recently read a book, The Closet Depressionist by Robert Sisti, which clearly conveys the demons that depression can conjure up. While I wouldn’t recommend this book for casual reading or for the young, if you want a glimpse into depression, this will give it.

Here is a tidbit from his poem, The Gift of Insomnia: “A beaten man, time feels still. Days are longer, crawl to my fill. Can’t eat, can’t sleep, wrinkles grow under my eyes. Daily emotional breakdowns are my demise. Fallen deeper onto this path, a life is gone.” This depicts the overwhelming sense of despair that depression can cause.

When I struggled with anxiety I often heard, “Pull yourself out of it; go for a walk, you’ll feel better.”

I’m sure the same is true for the depressed person. Unfortunately, depressed people, just like those suffering from anxiety, cannot ‘will’ themselves well.

According to the University Health Services, Tang Center, “Clinical depression is a serious illness that lasts for weeks, months and sometimes years.”

The three most common forms of depression are: major depression, dysthymia (a lesser form of depression), and bipolar disorder (also known as manic-depressive). According to research it is has not been determined if depression has a biological component to it or the depression causes biological changes. But, either way it is treated with anti-depressants to rebalance the chemical imbalance. Anti-depressants along with some form of therapy is the standard Western medical remedy.

In Eastern medicine, specifically Traditional Chinese Medicine, Dr. Henry Zhen-Hong Lee explains that depression comes from low energy in the kidneys and heart. There is also low energy and an imbalance in the neuro-transmitters. Chinese medicine attacks the root cause of the illness with acupuncture focused on the problematic organs and with individually designed herbs. This treatment increases and normalizes the low energy to the kidneys and heart and evens out the balance in the neuro-transmitters. The treatment should produce effective results within two to three months. Once the body is regulated, the acupuncture and herbs are no longer needed.

He goes on to clarify that as with any type of medicine, different practitioners have different views on causes and methods of treatments. Through years of study and practice Dr. Lee has devised his own unique understanding of this illness. When asked what his depressed patients can do at home to help themselves he advises the single most important thing to do is to avoid junk food and processed foods. Along with this, he recommends: eat healthy (natural and organic foods), do breathing exercises, and meditate.

Dr. Lee is a NYS Licensed Acupuncturist and an NCCA DPL. Herbalist. He also has degrees in Eastern medicine from Traditional Chinese Medical College, and in Western medicine from the Beijing Medical College.

Toxins and Your Immune System

Toxins and Your Body The body is like the ocean – it has the capability of self-cleaning. It has its own set of processes that work together to maintain its health. But, even with its amazing design, the ocean is becoming polluted, something that Lord Byron thought would never happen, “Man marks the earth with ruin; his control Stops with the shore.”(1)

And, as pollution now intrudes on the ocean, so is it causing harm to the body.

With an amazing design and through various processes the body actually removes harmful toxins. The liver acts as the main filter, with all the organs working in union and relying on each other to do their part. Unfortunately, there are just too many pollutants bombarding the body.

Imagine a bucket filled with water. Now imagine pouring more water in the bucket, continually. This is what’s happening with toxins and your body. It’s almost impossible for the body to function with the onslaught of pollution from the air, on the ground, and in the water.

So, what are toxins?

According to Medline Plus of the National Institutes of Health, “Toxins are substances created by plants and animals that are poisonous to humans.”(2) Toxins can also come from helpful medications that when used in large doses, or taken improperly, can become poisonous.

Toxins come from a variety of places, even from within our body, in natural processes. They are also manmade and come from external sources, such as the lotions and soaps we use, cosmetics, plastics, cigarettes, cars, and building material. While the body was created to efficiently detoxify itself, the external toxins are just too prevalent. They bombard our system on all fronts, through food, drinks (including water), and the air we breathe. And, aside for what we ingest or breathe, one of the biggest absorbers of toxins is our skin. The amount of toxins our body takes in on a daily basis is simply far too much for the liver to handle.

The consequences of overloading the liver with toxins is it can’t function properly or effectively. This causes our immune system, which is another part of our detoxification process, to be affected. The immune system helps find and eliminate invading enemies, such as viruses, harmful bacteria, toxins, and allergens. Toxin overload is the primary cause of the rise in food allergies, environmental allergies, and chemical sensitivity. It’s also one of the reasons why autoimmune diseases are skyrocketing. Our immune systems are overworked; this leads to its dysfunction.

The weakened and now dysfunctional immune system provides an open door for a number of chronic illnesses to enter the body and severe allergic reactions to occur.

The question is, what can we do to help ease the amount of toxins we take in?

The first course of action is to try to reduce the amount of toxins you’re exposed to. To do this you’ll need to realize that just about every product you use and even the air in your home is a risk factor.

According to a study quoted in an article by environmental freelance writer Claude Morgan, “Ninety percent of reported poisonings each year are due to toxins in U.S. homes.”(3) Interestingly, the study focused on acute incidents. It didn’t take into account long-term effects, such as multiple chemical sensitivity, asthma, and other chronic illnesses.

The 10 most dangerous home toxins listed in the article are: formaldehyde; radon; lead; carbon monoxide; vinyl chloride; hydrofluoric acid; solvents; disinfectants; and pesticides.

Taking steps to reduce the amount of toxins and allergens in your home will help your body and its immune system work the way it should.
